The Peace River Scottish Society was first formed in 1979 by Mr. Murray Cook. Since that time the club has been in continous operation.

The Peace River Scottish Society promotes Scottish culture through the art of Highland Dance. Nearly fifty dancers are presently part of the club. Dancing is learned through weekly lessons that run from September through May. Performance opportunities are abundant for the dancers in Peace River. Through out the year dancers perform at local events in the Peace Country. The dance club has an annual spring recital in may where the dancers demonstrate new dances learned through the year and new choreographed dances as taught by the instructors.

Dancers are also very active in competition. Peace River hosts two annual Highland Dance competitions. The first competition, in February, is part of the North Peace Rotary Music Festival. It is adjudicated and provides dancers with a great competition experience as they get both written and oral feed back from the judge. The second competition is larger and is held in June. This is an open competition.

Peace River dancers also compete and place in competitions through out the province, country and world. In past years the dancers have competed in Scotland and Australia. Dancers from Peace River have also competed in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskcatchwam, British Columbia and extensively in Alberta. Please visit our competition page for results of Peace River Dancers.

The Peace River Scottish Society is run by a Society and Executve formed by the parents of some of our fifty members. This parent group is the base of the club. They fill the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Tresurer as well as numerous committee jobs such as costumes, Bingo and Teacher Liason.

The Peace River Scottish Society is taught by two qualified S.D.T.A. instructors. Senior dancers who are working on their gold highlands and are at least thirteen years old are invited to help as junior instructors. Saturday classes are run by the junior instructors weekly. Regular clalsses during the week are run by the instructors.

Beginning dancers are given fourty-five minutes of instruction a week. More experienced dancers are given an hour a week shile denior dancers are given an hour and a half twice a week of instruction. Except for senior dancers, all dancers are given an extra hour of instruction on Saturdays.

Classes in the Peace River Scottish Society are mostly divided by S.D.T.A. medal testing levels however some dancers are placed in groups because of their competition levels.

Even during the summer months the dancers of the Peace River Scottish Society keep busy.

July 3 - Dancers from Peace River will be competing at the Fort Edmonton Competition in Edmonton, Alberta

July 23 through 25 - Dancers from Peace River will be attending the Summer Highland Workshop in Red Deer, Alberta

September 4 - Dancers from Peace River will be attending the Calgary, Alberta Competition

September 5 - Dancers will be attending the Canmore, Alberta Competition
